An authentically Scottish singer from the heart of the tradition, John was active on the Scottish folk scene in the earlier song-based days of the revival in the 1970s, in groups such as Chorda Cleich, before linking up with instrumentalists involved in the later tune-based revival in the 1970s.
His lively and characterful interpretations of songs are both distinctive and popular, and, although taking a 'sabbatical' from performance since the late 80s, welcomes the opportunity to spread the singing message to a new generation which is perhaps under-familiar with quality traditional song.
